Greenstreet Mountain Bike Lessons

Mountain Biking 101

Instructional sessions will cover the core fundamentals of mountain biking and will run 3-4 hours. For the first half of the session instructors will show participants how to make sure your bike is in good working condition each time you ride and go over essential items you need for each ride such as a helmet, hydration, etc. Riders will be shown fundamental skills and then be able to practice the drill in a designated skills zone to receive feedback. After the skills practice and a short break Instructors will lead participants on a group ride through the singletrack trails to apply the skills they just learned.

Before entering the trails, riders will learn about proper trail etiquette such as when it’s safe to ride depending on trail and weather conditions, what to do if you’re having a mechanical issue, and what to do when coming up on another rider or a hiker, etc. We’ll also stop at specific areas of the trail so participants can be shown some of the technical features like rocks, tree routes, etc., and we’ll point out and demonstrate line choices through those types of sections.

Our goal is to help mountain bike riders be safe and have fun on the trails! This all starts with knowing and practicing the fundamentals. With all of our amazing existing local trails and even more being planned and built, the opportunities for fun are growing exponentially and we’d like to help you along that journey!

Meet the Instructors

Each of our Instructors are Greenstreet Cycles Staff or Greenstreet Cycles Ambassadors.  Collectively they have many years of experience coaching adults and local youth in Nebraska DEVO, a junior mountain biking development program, and the Nebraska Interscholastic Cycling League (NICL), a middle school and high school mountain bike program. Each of our Instructors are also Certified Level 1 Instructors and Ride Leaders through the Bicycle Instructor Certification Program (BICP).

Todd Kay

Todd Kay, Service Manager of our Papillion location, has been racing BMX for 40 years. Since his time working at Greenstreet Cycles since 2018, Todd quickly picked up mountain biking and gravel riding while still racing BMX at the local, regional and national levels. Today, Todd is still racing BMX, has ridden in numerous gravel events, and races in the local mountain bike series. He has been a Nebraska DEVO Coach (youth mountain bike development program) since 2021 and a NICA Coach with the Nebraska Interscholastic Cycling League since 2023. Todd also has a Bicycle Instructor Certification Program (BICP) Level 1 Certification as well as a Ride Leader Certification.

Katie Odinas

Born and raised in Omaha Nebraska, spent much of my summers in Colorado and Nevada with my fun and wild family growing up. I have loved to be moving since I was a little girl, I was always trying to keep up with the older kids! I love gravel riding, challenging myself through the beautiful rolling hills and enjoy leisurely pavements rides with friends to wind down and soak up time together. I have a love for mountain biking that seems to only deepen as time unfolds. Being outside amongst the greenery and trees while getting to have the time of your life leaves me sublimely happy.

I love my community of friends I have been so fortunate to share these amazing experiences with. They are my encouragement and inspiration to continue to grow my skills and keep having fun!

Paul Johnson

"I grew up mountain biking in Southern California back when a suspension fork was still a luxury.  I moved to Nebraska for college in the mid-90’s and got away from cycling for many years. Like many others during the pandemic, I rediscovered my love for the sport and started gravel racing in 2021.  I’ve raced in Gravel Worlds, The Big Sugar, The Mid-South and Unbound to name a few. The Greenstreet crew got me back into mountain biking over the last year or so and I recently completed my BICP Level 1 and Rider Leader Certifications. My favorite thing about coaching is watching someone realize they can do things that they previously thought they couldn’t. Seeing that light bulb go on for a student is the best feeling."
